What characters does Tom Hanks play in the Polar Express?

Without a doubt, Tom Hanks is one of the greatest actors ever! I was a massive fan long before I ever saw The Polar Express. I really think he’s one of the most talented actors in Hollywood, not just when acting live in films, but when voicing animated characters as well. His voice as Woody in Toy Story is iconic, but he really takes it to the next level in The Polar Express, where he voices a full 6 different characters! He’s the man behind the conductor, the Hobo, Santa Claus, Hero Boy’s father, the Scrooge puppet, as well as the narrator as grown-up Hero Boy.

His biggest speaking role in The Polar Express is that of the conductor. The conductor acts as a guide and guardian to everyone aboard The Polar Express, and America’s dad is perfect for the role. His calm yet assertive voice makes the characters feel safe and secure, so much so that they’re willing to board a mysterious train in the middle of the night.

As Santa Claus, his charisma and charm shine through, making him feel even more real and engaging, while at the same time keeping the character strong and authoritative.

One of my favourite characters in The Polar Express is the Hobo. Tom’s voice, but more so his facial expressions and mannerisms, bring life to the closest thing to an antagonist this film has. He does a great job making the character seem wise, experienced and charismatic, while giving him just the right amount of mystery.

His other characters don’t get nearly as much screen time, but Mr Hanks still gives it his all. Hero Boy’s father’s voice is gentle and reassuring, as you would expect a father’s to be, while his Scrooge character’s rough and gruff voice creates just the right amount of tension and apprehension.

Speaking in his natural voice as the narrator, Hero Boy clearly grows up still believing in the spirit of Christmas. Once again, his voice fills us with feelings of trust and security, and although it’s not talked about or mentioned in the book or film, I’m sure that Hero Boy becomes as trustworthy as Tom Hanks himself.

One day, when I’m famous and Hollywood has decided to make a movie about my life, it’s my sincerest wish that Tom Hanks plays me!
